This is a course on social inequality. In this course, we will seek to understand the effects and reproduction of social inequality in the United States. We will try to answer questions such as: What is Inequality? How does it matter? How does it work? How do parents’ social class and other aspects of their life situations impact their kids’? Racial Inequality in Latin America
The following news article serves to demonstrate how prevalent racial inequality is in Brazil. The article reports that Brazilian operas casted a black actor in a lead role which is a novelty in Brazilian society. Brazilian society is very fragmented racially and whites are treated as superiors. The article also mentions how racial disparity in Brazil is similar to that of the United States. Like in the United States, as the middle class grows in Brazil so do opportunities for blacks and mixed races. I thought this article was very interesting as it illustrates very similar issues faced in American society today.
