NYT Ch. 10 The Five-Bedroom, Six-Figure Rootless Life
The phenomena of relo in the United States is getting more and more common as people are constantly seeking for advancement in their life. According to "The Five-Bedroom Six-Figure Rootless Life", relos can be referred to those who constantly relocate themselves due to work demands which causes their family to be rootless. The article provides a common example of the Americans nowadays as the Links have been moving from one place to another for several times because of Jim's job which made his wife and children cannot be locate themselves into a certain environment or neighborhood for a long time. Although they may not have a specific neighborhood that affects their lifestyle in a long term, their constant changes from place to place prove that their mobility is high and compared to working and lower class, the relos posses more opportunities and a greater chance in making advancement. Some classmates suggest that the Links family maybe wealthy but there is a negative impact towards the children as they have to leave the environment they just got used to and start all over again in the new place. As the process repeats, they become upset because they have to leave the stuff and friendship they obtained and established. However, I do not see it this way. If neighborhood plays such an important role in defining one's class, the constant changes that the relos made are definitely worthwhile. Imagine that a family earns enough money and decided to settle down finally, the neighborhood would be better off than any of the ones they lived before because they have the money to choose to live in a good neighborhood. Hence, the final neighborhood the family decided to settle in is the most vital one among the others as it gives the most influences to the children for rest of their adolescent life.
