This is a course on social inequality. In this course, we will seek to understand the effects and reproduction of social inequality in the United States. We will try to answer questions such as: What is Inequality? How does it matter? How does it work? How do parents’ social class and other aspects of their life situations impact their kids’? How do government policies matter?

City Slicker Farms
City Slicker Farms is an organization in West Oakland that strives to bring a more health-conscious community by teaching the local people how to farm in their backyards, as well by teaching them how to cook such produce (among many other things). I found this to be relevant to our discussions on the redevelopment of blighted communities and on how neighborhoods can really shape the characteristics of a community. I actually took a field trip here from a previous class (it is accessible by bus), and the organization provides opportunities for volunteering and internships.
