This is a course on social inequality. In this course, we will seek to understand the effects and reproduction of social inequality in the United States. We will try to answer questions such as: What is Inequality? How does it matter? How does it work? How do parents’ social class and other aspects of their life situations impact their kids’? How do government policies matter?

Teacher Grades: Pass or Be Fired
Just thought this might be interesting. This article talks about the rating of grade school teachers and how several have been fired for the poor performance of their students. It might be easier to "sort and fire" teachers rather than helping the "struggling" ones. Something striking that I found was, "During the most recent observation, her evaluator subtracted points because she had failed to notice a girl eating during class, the teacher said." Many teachers feel they are being evaluated unfairly. Any comments? Do you think it's really the teacher's fault for lower test scores, or the unwillingness of students?
